Knee Pain & Treatment

Orthopedic Knee Joint Pain

One of the most common issues that limits movements in people and causes disability.

What is Knee Pain?

The knees are one of the most important weight bearing joints along with hips and ankles. This joint also rotates and twists, providing full mobility to the legs. For performing these various movements, the knee relies on its various components comprising of tendons, cartilage, ligaments, and bones. It is obvious the knee is a complex joint, and when things go wrong with its components there is orthopedic knee pain.

Causes of Orthopedic Knee Joint Pain

  • Torn or swollen ligaments
  • Tear in the cartilage
  • Impact to the knee joint can cause bones to chip, and the fragments can get stuck in the joint causing swelling and pain
  • Overuse of the knee joint, repeated bending, or arthritic condition can cause irritation to the bursa, which is a fluid sac that protects and cushions the knee. This can cause the sac to swell and give pain
  • A tough tissue called iliotibial that goes from the hip down to the shin crossing the knee, can get swollen due to overuse and cause pain
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Partial dislocation of knee cap
  • Schlatter disease, which causes a painful bump on a tendon connecting the shin and kneecap

Knee Joint Pain Treatment

The type of knee pain treatment will mainly depend on the severity of the injury or condition. Many knee injuries are not serious, and can be treated at home. However, it is important to have your joints checked by a knee pain specialist. A knee pain doctor will be able to diagnose the exact cause or issue that is causing the pain in your knees and provide best course of treatment and can advise you on pain management.
