BIO-FUE Hair Transplantation

BIO-FUE Hair Transplantation

Follicular unit extraction (FUE) is one of two primary methods of obtaining follicular units, or the naturally occurring groups of one to four hairs, for hair transplantation.

It is a harvesting technique first described by Masumi Inaba, in Japan in 1988. He introduced the use of a 1-mm needle for extracting follicular units. Later, Dr. Ray Woods in Australia successfully popularized the FUE procedure.

When using FUE, we are able to extract single follicular units or (groupings of 1, 2, 3, and sometimes, 4 hair follicles) individually from the donor area without a scalpel. This also means the patient will not require any stitches and there is no linear scar. FUE is a minimally invasive procedure that heals faster with less pain and activity restrictions post-operatively.

Graft survival of follicular units upon extraction from the scalp is one of the key variables of successful hair transplantation. Dr. Greco’s work in graft survival dates back to 1996 with his research and published studies on H-Factor.

Since then advances have been made to reduce the rate of transection in FUE procedures with automated machines. Conversely, the skill of the surgeon and team and the type of instrumentation used are major factors in the ultimate yield and viability of the follicular units.

NeoGraft is an automated extraction device we use and when tested side by side with the Robotic device demonstrated faster extraction and less transection in FUE grafts.

Dr. Greco was the first to use Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) in “all phases of hair transplantation surgery”. Independent published studies (Miao, et al, 2013) now demonstrate the growth factors in PRP yields hair sooner and denser.

Bio-FUE TM developed by Greco Medical Group utilizes your own proteins to heal the donor site faster, yield hair sooner and thicker and increase the density of non-transplanted hairs.

The faster a wound heals the less scaring. The use of PRP and biologics has been extensively used and studies in acute and chronic wounds are considered advanced wound care. A ten-year retrospective literature study and Meta analysis shows wounds heal faster with PRP and with less pain in acute wounds. In fact, Medicare now pays for PRP in acute and chronic wounds. Therefore, Bio FUETM has advantages in the donor site with FUE to prevent denting and scaring when these growth factors are used.

Often, people make the mistake of concentrating too much on how grafts are extracted and place less emphasis on artistic hairline design. Novice surgeons are prone to major errors in hairline design, angles and orientation of grafts. So, it is critical that prospective patients evaluate a surgeon’s proven expertise using the FUE technique and artistry; extensive experience is required when designing hairlines so they look natural.
